Barca faced off against Getafe at the Camp Nou with a less than convincing victory. Even though Barca were able to score two goals in the first half from Sergi Roberto and Memphis Depay, Getafe was able to take advantage against the weak defense of Barca. Getafe, a team who could not score against a 10 man Valencia was able to place the ball past Ter Stegen. The biggest criticisms fall upon Greizmann and Koeman. Griezmann was invisible, not involved in the attack against Getafe whatsoever. Koeman has proven to provide zero tactical prowess regarding any mindful plan on the pitch. To add to this, subs were only utilized to maintain the lead and not used to improve the game or replace tired or poor performing players. Where are Puig and Coutinho? Koeman needs to rotate players and find new tactical choices. Experiment with the players you have and make some smart decisions. Utilizing the same line up and only making changes when it;s too late is not intelligent football or leadership. The positives were single player standout performances from Depay, Frenkie De Jong, and Ronald Araujo. Our future looks grim as we head into a 2 week international break and play against Sevilla. As well we will be playing against Atletico Madrid and Real Mardrid coming October. Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel! The BarcaBreakdown discusses the second game of the 2021-22 La Liga Season which resulted in a 1-1 draw against Athletic Bilbao. Ronald Koeman went with the same line-up as he did against La Real.
The first half of the game had blunders from the likes of Eric Garcia and Neto. This allowed Inaki Williams to threaten us multiple times which finally resulted in a goal from Martinez. Braithwaite (who had an early chance on goal) and Greizmann were hardly seen on the ball for any time of forward play. To add to the dismay, Pique came off early in the game due to injury and was replaced by Araujo, who played wonderfully, even attempting a bicycle kick goal that was overturned.
Positive highlights of the game came in the form of some beautiful offensive and defensive work rate from Frenkie De Jong, a stalwart in the midfield. Unfortunately, Pedri looked a little tied but still played well. He will be receiving a 2 week vacation to give him some rest time.
Finally in the 75’ Depay scored a well controlled rocket of a shot past the goal to equalize. Near the end of the game Depay went just wide to miss the net to take the lead. The result, a 1-1 draw at San Mames, leaves Barca with 4 points for the season.
Koeman has his work ahead of him leading into next week's game at the Camp Nou against Getafe.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss FC Barcelona's 4-2 victory against Real Sociedad in the first La Liga game of the season. With goals by Gerard Pique, 2 by Martin Braithwaite, and Sergi Roberto, Ronald Koeman's team played some beautiful football/soccer in the first game after Lionel Messi's departure to PSG from Barca. The team did have some defensive lapses in the second half as we allowed 2 goals to La Real.
For the starting lineup, Koeman mainly went with an expected 11 anchored by the midfield of Pedri, Busquets, and Frenkie de Jong. Up front, Barca had Memphis Depay, Braithwaite, and Antoine Griezmann. In the back, the biggest surprise was starting Erica Garcia over Lengelet or Araujo, to go along with Sergino Dest, Gerard Pique, and Jordi Alba.
The offense looked explosive, with Barca routing Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou for most of the game. Memphis Depay impressed on his first official Barca game, though he was not able to get his first goal. Koeman utilized all 5 subs, which seemed to have thrown off the cohesion amongst the lineup, as Emerson, Araujo, and Lengelet all subbed in for our defense.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss Messi leaving to PSG and the reason why Messi left. In our opinion, Laporta and the FC Barcelona board left Messi no choice, as Laporta valued the Super League and rejecting the CVC Capital Partners deal over retaining Messi. Though as fans this sounds incomprehensible, it is clear that Laporta was looking out for Barca's future, with an understanding that the Super League is necessary for Barca to grow and succeed in the future.
It must be said, the fault here is entirely on Bartomeu. The decisions made by Laporta and the Board were forced due to our financial ruin brought on by Bartomeu. However, there are still issues we have with how this was handled.
Our issue comes with the way that Laporta promised the Barca socio would vote for the Super League before FC Barcelona joined. However, with Messi, we made a choice for the Super League before any Socios voted. Even if the choices made by the board are the best for Barca's future, in the end we needed to do a better job of the farewell from Messi.
Looking to the future, there are some new things about life without Messi that we can be excited about. For one, there is no more pressure to be the favorites in every big game, which hopefully can mean some of our younger players can develop without the same pressure. Players like Fati, Dembele, De Jong, Collado, Demir, Puig etc can now play without every game having the ramifications of being part of Messi's legacy. As well, it will be nice to see this team develop after Messi and begin a new era for Barca. Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel!

The BarcaBreakdown discuss, with Messi’s official farewell, FC Barcelona has won the Joan Gamper Trophy with a 3-0 victory over Juventus. A sad yet promising day in Barca’s future. We saw some wonderful young faces and goals with the likes of Depay and Puig. We discuss today’s performance and how we will move forward as we start the 2021-22 Season next week. Before the game, it was reported that Frenkie De Jong, Lenglet, and Sergio Aguero were injured and will be out for a few weeks. Despite this, we had a great opener to the first half with a wonderful goal from Memphis Depay, assisted by Demir. In the second half we had 2 goals beginning with a corner from Depay and Braithwaite placing a flying header in the back of the net. Near the end of the game, a pass from Nic, Puig takes a turn and pummels the ball in the back of the Juventus net. The game showed wonderful pressure and defensive work rates from forwards, Greizmann and Braithwaite. Of course Araujo looked strong and bullied with his big body and Pique tactfully cleared balls. Roberto still has no place on the pitch but it was wonderful to see Neto gaining some traction by deflecting multiple shots including an attempt from Ronaldo. Neto won the MVP of the game and Busquets held up the trophy after the match as captain with a smile. Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel! The BarcaBreakdown discuss the GINORMOUS news that FC Barcelona have confirmed Messi WILL NOT sign for Barca next season. After all signs, and words from Laporta, had pointed to a Messi renewal, the wage restrictions from La Liga apparently/allegedly mean Messi cannot sign for Barca and he may go to PSG or Manchester City!
The day began with a normal meeting between Jorge Messi and the FC Barcelona Board/Laporta, where Barca and Messi were supposed to finalize the deal and announce the renewal press conference. All was in order to get Messi’s renewal signed and to have Messi announced as the Captain of Barca for the Joan Gamper game against Juventus (and Cristiano Ronaldo).
Then MARCA came with the big report that Barca was apart from Messi renewing. The new CVC Capital Partner purchase of 10% of La Liga was at odds with Barca and Real Madrid’s desires. And suddenly, the BOMBAZO as FC Barcelona’s official Twitter/Facebook accounts sent out the official statement that Messi would not sign.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Laporta told Jorge Messi the club cannot afford Messi due to La Liga/Tebas’s restrictions. However, some people (including us) believe this is a power play by FC Barcelona to have La Liga loosen the restrictions. As ESPN’s new TV Rights deal for La Liga just passed, not having Messi in the league will certainly diminish the worth of La Liga and other clubs in the league.
If the news is true, and no bigger play is going on here, Messi will likely end up at PSG with Neymar and Mbappe. Or, Messi may end up with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. However, this does leave the question of what will happen with Barca signings like Depay, Griezmann, Aguero etc.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss the FC Barcelona preseason victory against Stuttgart 0-3 in Germany! Depay, Demir, Puig all scored, with Griezmann assisting two goals! Koeman's side looked impressive, as Koeman continues to use youth/BarcaB players like Nico Gonzalez, Gavi, and Demir.
With Depay looking great, and connecting well with Griezmann, we are very excited to see Depay and Messi connect (assuming we sign Messi with our wages...). Memphis Depay offers us an attacking spark that we desperately needed last season. Griezmann had two assists, but was largely absent from the first half besides those. We hope to see Antoine take a reduced pay cut soon and get back into form.
On the defensive side, Pique and Lengelet were not challenged a great deal, but there do seem to be some issues lingering from last season. Araujo looked solid on defense, but he definitely needs to improve his passing as we head into the La Liga season.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss the contract negotiations with Ilaix Moriba and Antoinne Griezmann. Ilaix, who is already on high wages due to Bartomeu, is asking for TRIPLE his current wages. As his contract ends next summer, Laporta and the Board need to re-sign him now or else he can leave free next summer. With Messi unable to sign for La Liga due to Barca wages being too high, we need players like Ilaix to work with the club to ensure we can fight for the Champions League next season.
We also appreciate the club coming out to support Ilaix against the racist abuse he showed on TikTok. Though contract negotiations are heated, it is good the club took a firm stand against racism.
We also discuss Griezmann, who is Barca's second highest wage earner. Though initially rumors were high that we would swap Griezmann for Saul at Atletico, those rumors have died down since Simeone's Atletico did not want to pay the wages of Griezmann entirely. It now seems that Griezmann is willing to take a reduced contract/pay cut, which the BarcaBreakdown hope means we can keep both Messi AND Griezmann next season.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss Pedri, the BREAKOUT STAR of 2021 soccer/football and the Euro 2020 Young Player of the Tournament. We discuss the high praise the FC Barcelona and Spanish National Team star Pedri has received from all around the globe, as Luis Enrique referred to him as doing things at 18 that the LEGEND Andres Iniesta wasn't. Pedri's Euro performance was so great that Alvaro Morata said the Pedri will certainly be one of Spain's greatest ever players, which is high praise that us cules know considering the greatness we have seen from Iniesta and Xavi.
We discuss Pedri at Barca in 2020/2021, and how his end of year performances were hampered by a lack of rest due to Ronald Koeman's lack of rotations. As Pedri will play for Olympic Gold with Spain at the Olympic Games 2020 Tokyo, we hope the board and Koeman give Pedri a well deserved rest before the La Liga Season begins.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss what is stopping Lionel Messi from winning the 2021 Ballon D'Or. Answer: NOTHING! After being the top scorer, assister, best player, and CHAMPION of the 2021 Copa America, Lionel Messi looks clear to take home his 7th Ballon D'or to the Camp Nou and FC Barcelona/Argentina fans. As ESPNFC covered earlier this week, nothing will stop Messi due to his outrageous 2021 and finally breaking the curse and winning an international title for Argentina.
We discuss the possible reasons Messi may not win. For one, Robert Lewandowski should rightfully have on the 2020 award. We worry he may get some votes as compensation for the fact that France Football not awarding the Ballon d'Or in 2020. We also think voter fatigue might set in, so that some may not want to keep giving Messi the same award year after year.
Jorginho also has a case, as he was the winner of the Champions League with Chelsea, and the Euros with Italy. N'golo Kante also won with Chelsea and was a favorite, but France's poor performance at the Euros leave his hopes in major doubt.
Overall, we think Messi should walk away easy with the award. Captain, Copa America Champion, Copa Del Rey Champion, and undoubtedly the best player of 2021 (and of all time).
